Thread: Jacketed 300-350 gr bullets for 458 Lott

Default Jacketed 300-350 gr bullets for 458 Lott

I would like to have some load data for jacketed 300-350 gr bullets for my 458 Lott. Can I use existing/published 458 Win Mag data?

    Default yey and nay

The only published data source I have for the Lott is the Hornady 7th edition. It lists a 350 gr bullet load for both. While the data overlaps some between the Win Mag and the Lott the different case capacities call for different start and max loads for each type of powder. That means a minimum or starting load for a powder/bullet combo for the Win Mag is too low for the Lott. Of course the max load in the Win Mag is well below the max load in the Lott with any given powder/bullet. The theory is that a charge too low (too low a load density) for a particular powder/bullet/cartridge combo can cause upredictable pressures. This seems especially true with the very slow ball powders.... the good news is that neither cartridge calls for the very slow ball powders.

    Default Much appreciated

As I don't own a Hornacy 7th edition, would you please give me some examples of the loads you mentioned for the 350 gr jacketed bullet (without getting into copyright problems of course).

www.alliantpowder.com has two loads in their pdf file; it might pay to check hodgdon, accuratepowder and ramshot.

    Default data

    Well,
I'm not worried about copyright.... more like liability of second hand data!
I checked Hodgdon online and they don't list data for the Lott.

Here's a pic of the Lott 350 gr. data from Hornady
Next post will be same for the 458 Win Mag.

    Smile Many, Many Thanks

This is really a BIG help. By the way, I just ordered the 7th edition Hornady reloading book from Amazon.com. I am also trying to find some loads for the 375 H&H with the Hornady 200-220 gr jacketed bullets.

    Default 375HH data

    Good deal!
You'll be happy to know that the Hornady manual also has data for the 375 HH 220-225 gr. bullets!.... as do the current Lee manual and for the 235 gr in the older Lyman manuals.
