    Default 30-30 pistol powder

I have now loaded my 30-30 with unique, blue dot,red dot and 2400. I want more loads using pistol powder. I would like some using 700x,800x or PB. Bullet weights would be 100-180 gr cast lead OR jacketed. If you have some please share them. I have the Trail Boss data already. Thank you so much. Jim

Since you posted the same thread over here, I'll repeat my reply.

Don't use pistol powders with jacketed bullets in rifle cases. The danger of pressure spikes is too great, even with reduced loads. That do-it-yourself piercing look with parts of a rifle action is not a fashion statement. They're fine for cast, if used prudently. Win231, Bullseye, and Green Dot are other possibles you can try with cast. Don't overlook RE7, 3031, & 4895 for both cast and jacketed loads in the .30-30, either.

Imr 3031 is good for a 30/30. I never used pistol powders in mine...

I always used W-748 and IMR-4350. Those are the two rifle powders that the local store sold.
The pistol powders were unique, blue dot,red dot, W-231,W-296 and 2400.
Versifier thanks for looking out for me. I said "lead or jacketed". lol So how bout it? Do you have any cast loads you can share? I am looking for reduced velocity loads using pistol powder.

From Metallic Cartridges Reloading by E.A. Matunas:

    30-30, 173gr Lead in a 20" bbl
    6.5/8.5 of PB = 1100/1275fps for 24000/36500cup,
    7/10grs of Unique = 1200/1550fps for 20000/36000cup.

For pressure data to be given, I would venture that the loads came from Lyman's Handbook.

You first asked about 700X. Don Zutz wrote a Propellant Profiles for Handloader mag. on that powder and gave:
7.0/8.0 of 700X with a 150gr GC for 1300/1400fps and 27000/36400cup (pressure figures from Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook or writer's estimates...).

gmdr.com also has lots of data:

take a good look at sr-4759 and 4895 either one will work here.
and about the only 2 i can recommend for reduced jacketed loads.
i have used unique, i ain't recommending it though, except for cast.

I posted this question on several different sites. I wanted to try and
get as many new loads as possible. I also wanted to compare the answers.
I posted the links so you could see the various responses.
I thought it would be easier to share like this.
Some of the people were quite helpful.

I sent a question to Sierra bullets about using Bluedot and 150gr jacketed bullets in a 30-30. This is a copy of that email.
Jim, about all the reduced loads you will find will always be with lead bullets. Thay are a lot easier to push down the bore than a jacketed bullet. Since you have been using that load of Blue Dot with the 150 grain jacketed bullet with out any problems, you should have no problem using it with our 125 grain bullet either. There is a load for Unique with a jacketed 30-30 bullet in 125/130 grain also with about 8 to 8.5 grains. The Unique powder is a little better choice for a reduced load than Blue Dot, since it is easier to ignite. Velocity on that Unique load should be around 1500 fps.

I have been loading my 30-30 with 13gr of bluedot under 150gr Speer FN bullets. It really shoots good. I want to try your 125 gr HP,But I have been told that it wouldn't be safe. I was told that using jacketed bullets with pistol powders is not safe. Would it be safe? What would the vel. be? The 150gr load is from the alliant website. It is for a cast bullet moving around 1525fps. Thanks Jim
