    Default 32-40 Load Data

    Hi !

OK, I'm plum flustered.... I have a Marlin 1893 and a 93 SRC that I'm trying to load for....

Right now, all I have for the 170g Lyman Lead is AA5744......

Is there anyone out there that has developed loads for this caliber. I'm wanting to try WC 872 but haven't been able to find and MILSUPLUS to commercial load comparrison charts nor any load data for lead bullets....

I'd appreciate any and all help.

    thanks !

    Hi there!

http://www.accuratepowder.com/ ; all powder makers have data on line but these guys have the whole reloading book.

Depending on the age and condition of your smokepoles , you might have to use light cowboy loads.

For the surplus powder, look the other door on the castboolits forum, they have a special section.

Whatever you find from other reloaders, check with the powder company to have an idea of the pressure the load develops ( www.alliantpowder.com , www.ramshot.com , www.hodgdon.com will have links to IMR and Winchester....)

From Ken Waters' Pet Loads, for a 26" bbl:

    181gr Lyman 321297
    13-15grs of 4227=1240-1410fps
    18grs of 4198=1550fps

    182gr Lyman 321232 plain base
    15grs of 4198=1320fps
    24grs of 4895=1460fps
He recommends these last two loads for old rifles.

the old "why not load your own" by Townsend Whelen gives:
    12-14grs of 4759 with a Lyman 321232 of 170gr (i know, it's 182gr for Waters)

Propellant Profiles / Du Pont 4759 by John Wooters gives:
    13.5grs/4759=1400fps with the 175gr Lyman 321295

And from Ctges Of The World, 7th Edition:

    165gr Lead
    H4895x16grs=1410fps
    H4198x14grs=1340fps

These two loads are OK for old rifles and are said to come from Hodgdon.
There's a huge difference with Water's load for the 4895, even if we consider he used IMR's version...

From Rifle 164, March '96. an article by Mike Nesbit on the C.Sharps Arms Highwall replica in 32-40 (28"bbl):
    98gr PB/5 grs of Unique=1144fps
    162 Rapine PB/ 17.5grs of RL-7= 1448fps
    165gr PB/ 16grs RL-7= 1342fps
    165gr PB/ 17grs RL-7=1440fps (duplicates old factory load)
    175gr GC/ 17.5grs RL-7= 1436fps ( UMC cases, good groups)
    175gr GC/ 17.5grs RL-7= 1498fps ( WW cases, best cast load)
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
    175gr GC/ 21grs RL-7= 1744fps ( Hi Vel load)
    175gr GC/ 25 grs 3031= 1771fps (2" @ 100 yards)
    170gr Hdy/ 25grs 3031= 1729fps
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
168gr PB/ 2+38grs RL-7+FG=1384fps; Duplex load, appropriate and clean BP load.
    168gr PB/ 2+38grs RL-7+FFG= 1530fps; Duplex load, fairly hot for Blackpowder.

Watch out for these hi vel/hi pressure loads, they are for modern and strong guns, I put them here in case someone has such a rifle.
