i use a 7x57 with 139 gr hornady interlocks for elk.
the hornady does a very good job of penetrating and opening with modest velocitys.
within 300 yds a few hundred feet in velocity is really not that big of a deal.
a 150 at 2700 or a 174 at 2400 either will do the job.

i have shot a couple of deer with a 200 gr speer in my 8 mauser launched at 2,000 fps.
and a few more with cast boolits at the same velocity.

the only time i have seen velocity really matter is when you are trying to make a jacketed hollow point open.

That's a pretty big jump in price for the heavier bullets. I get the impression you are not here in the US. This leads me to believe that the elk you speak of might be what we here in the US call the moose. If I am ccorrect, I believe the heavier weight bullet would be the better option. I understand about bullet cost, When I decided to use the 225 gr. Barnes TSX at $45 a box for 50 bullets, I cringed, bit the bullet and paid the price. The end result was a very badly spooked cow elk running like mad, shot, stopped and dead right there at 150 yards. I bought three of those boxes of pricey bullets used about 30 to get the load I wanted and the rest are loaded and ready and waiting for my next elk hunt which will start December 6, 2012.
I'm sure the 150 gr. bullet will work just fine on a nice broadside shot but what if you don't get that easy shot? The elk I shot in 2010 with the Barnes bullet was running like mad quartering slightly to the left. The bullet hit just behind the short ribs and exited between the neck and right shoulder. The elk dropped at impact and that bullet traveled through about four feet of animal before exiting. I guess that expensive bullet was worth every penny, judging by the end result. That two year old cow elk made for some very tasty dinners.

I live in Idaho no one carry the 174 for my Enfield [ got it in 1961 ] I would have order them $22.00 + shipping $14.50 + $38.87
I can it the 150 local $18.00 - $ 25.00 The 174 would be a better choose. I’am retire and on a fix income.
I only elk hunting if I get a controlled hunt tag like got the last four or five years .I was luckly the one I got was within 100yds and I used factory The most of them I saw were 175 to 200yds +I use my Steven 325A 30-30 [ got in 1956 ] for deer got a lot of deer with it

I can certainly understand where you are coming from on that. So am I. What I did was stock up long before I retired which was about 11 years ago. That has helped out a lot. At least you're in good hunting country. I am too but tags here in Arizona are not all that easy to draw. In 33 years since I moved here, I have never drawn for antelope. In 2009, one of the sites I go to sponsored a group hunt with an outfitter in New Mexico for a reduced price and I put it on the credit card. I got a very nice one and his head looks down at me when I watch TV.
It's been 8 years since I drew an elk tag so in 2010, I booked with the same outfitter and did a fairly affordable cow elk hunt, again in New Mexico. Thanks once again to the plastic. Well, I'm down to a couple of pounds of hamburger from that elk so I'm booked again for another cow elk hunt in December.
I haven't drawn for deer in Arizona for the last 6 years and won't know if I have until August. Based on past results, I'm not holding my breath. My wife has also put in for this hunt as she likes the area I out in for so maybe with her on the form, it might change my luck.
I wonder why shipping is so expensive? Must be Midway. For some reason, they won't use the Post Office flat rate boxes where if it fits, it ships. That would only be $5.00 and change for shipping using the small box. I just bought a bunch of 250 gr. .35 caliber Hornady bullets, three boxes worth and they fit into that $5.00 box.
Dunno what the 174 gr. bullets sell for down here but I could take a look and if you want get a box and ship it in the flat rate box. Your choice. I checked the box that the bullets came in and it was $6.00 but that was with insurance. I think the rate is $5.15 give or take a few cents.

i have a partial box of the 174 gr hornady's if you were close enough i would have just dropped them off or met you somewhere.
we have been talking about going to henry's lake for some camping/fishing and thought i might be close enough to wherever you were to make a small side trip.
