    Default 1884 Trapdoor Die Question

    Finally got the nerve to shoot my dads, 45-70.... Immediate love affair....
    Now I want to reload for it,.... I know there is a Special powder 5774
    Looking for recommendations on a die set, and any watch out fors you guys can give me.... thanks in advance.

    45-70 is very straight forward.
    be aware there are three levels of loading for the 45-70 though.
    your falls in the lowest pressure range.
    aa-5744 isn't the only suitable powder there are several others.
    if you are going to use cast bullets for it i'd stick with the 405 grain flat nose, and make sure you measure out the bbl some of those older guns went as big as 461

    thank you ____ do you have any pref: on other powders,... and is one better than another,
    I started to do some reading about the development of the round and it is very interesting,
    I would like to stay as close to original as possible.

    4198 would work for you.
    If you have access to some Lyman Reloading books take a look through them.
    5744 is a great powder you will have left over in the barrel.
    Trail Boss would also work fantastic for you.
