    Question Reloading .32 H&R Mag & .327 w/Unique

    I have some .32 caliber 60 grain and 85 grain Hornady JHP bullets. My pistol is a Ruger SP-101 in .327 Federal. I have .32 H&R Mag cases that I would like to load with the 60 grain bullets and .327 cases to load the 85 grain bullets.The powder I would like to use for this is Unique, but have been unable to find any load information for these combination's. Any suggestions for safe starting powder loads?

    What manuals do you have?

    One reason you are having trouble finding data for the 60gr bullets is that they are designed for the .32ACP. I don't find anything under 71gr for the .32mag listed in any of the manuals I have on hand. You might try contacting various powder and bullet makers to see if any have some loads for them.

    There is plenty of data available for 85gr in the .32mag, the round (along with the .32S&W Long) that the bullet is made for. Lyman lists UNQ at 4.0 START to 4.5MAX for that bullet.

    Data for the .327 is few and far between as it's so new. Alliant's website lists Power Pistol and 2400 for 115gr loads, but no UNQ loads. Likely there is a good reason for that. Again your best data sources will be bullet and powder makers as most of the manuals don't list it yet. I have very good luck with 2400 in 110-120gr handgun loads for the .30carbine, a round fairly close to the .327 in power and case capacity and suggest you get yourself some heavier bullets and start there.

    Thanks for the post. My manuals are pretty old - Speer and Sierra (70s vintage). In doing research on the .327, I ran across several articles (by Lane Pearce, Joe D'Alessandro and Jeff Quinor) with load data on 60g bullets in the .327. I liked the idea of a 60g bullet for plinking, but thought it would be better suited to the .32mag. I was just hoping someone had worked up some loads for the .32mag with 60g bullets like these guy's did for the .327.

    Right now I'm concentrating reloading on rounds/loads not available commercially. Do to the lack of brass availability, I purchased 100g and 85g .327 rounds and 85g .32mag rounds. Since I have Unique and CCI 500 and 550 primers on hand, I wanted to start using these. Particularly with 60 grain bullets in the .32mag and 85 grain bullets in .327 cases.

    Thanks for any information that anyone can provide.

    If your manuals are that old then you should be aware that there have been a lot of changes in the intervening years both in some of the powders themselves and more importantly in how chamber pressures are measured. Current manuals are the best deals on life insurance you will find anywhere and I suggest you update your ancient data with two or three new ones. I have a good collection of older manuals, too, but I only use them for comparison. A lot of folks will say that "modern" loads are reduced to keep corporate lawyers happy, but there are serious safety concerns about pressure data measured by the obsolete copper crusher method, even if the powder in question is still the same and hasn't been reformulated.

    I have no idea if the twist of your revolver will stabilize those light bullets or not. You might just get shotgun patterns, but it's always worth a try to find out. I have yet to run across any firearm that can read and many times I have had very good results with combinations that are not "supposed" to work well. The only way to know what any individual gun will shoot well is to work up some loads and see for yourself. You might (or might not) get a pleasant surprise. If you find a data source, please post it.

    Thanks for the advice. Your suggestion about a new manual seems sound, but I might wait until I can find one with .327 data. I would still like to try the 60 grain bullets in the .32mag if I can find some safe loads, but will take your warning about accuracy before loading very many. If they don't work well in the 3” length of the SP-101, they may work better in the longer barreled Blackhawk I'm thinking of purchasing.

    It's not the length of the barrel, it's the twist rate of the rifling, which is optimized for longer, heavier bullets. It is always safe to use data for a slightly heavier bullet (not much more than 10-15gr though), and cast and jacketed data is generally interchangable.

    Call or email Sierra and ask them about loads for lighter bullets. They will tell you what they think even for loads not using their products. If you call, you can pick the brain of one of their ballistic techs and those boys really know their stuff when it comes to jacketed bullets. Since they are currently making bullets for the .327, they have obviously done a bunch of testing and though they do not publish all of their results they are very good about providing it when asked. sierra@sierrabullets.com or 1-800-223-8799

    One manual is never enough to evaluate a potential load. Two is minimum, three or more is best. You can judge data from a questionable source by comparing it with that from different reliable sources to see if any or all are in agreement. As to waiting until they are listed, they are all updated at different intervals and you may have to wait more than a few years for some of them.
