Favorite Single Shots

I have 2 contenders and several barrels 22rf ,.357 mag.,410/45 lc ,357 Herrett & 45-70 govt. Been shooting them starting in 1967. They grow on you, have taken a lot of big game with them. about the only thing i hunt now is hogs and the 45-70 stops them cold. one good hit does it.

My latest single shot rifle is a Browning B 78, 24 inch full octagon barrel with sights.
And best of all, it's a 45-70 .

I have a Ruger #1 Tropical in 375 H&H. It is my first "modern" rifle.
I now have others to call upon but that #1 is the go-to for anything from crows on up.

Magna-Ported, Leupold 2.5-8, Sierra 330 grain SBT Game King over 77.2 grains of IMR 4350, lit by a Federal Magnum primer...all wrapped up in a Winchester case.


The 375 worked so well, I eventually bought the Browning A-bolt Medallion. It's a repeater that gets used like a single shot.

Of course there are also the Savage 22lr (squirrels and rabbits) and the T/C Hawken 45 percussion.

I was browsing through the forum and was interested in the chatter about Ruger No. 1's. my bro has one in 30-06 and its a very handsome rifle with nice timberand and it shoots well to boot. He's got me interested in getting one in 45-70 in the timber stock. I have a 45-70 in a guide gun so I have all the reloading gear for it. I also think there is something a little special about a good quality single shot ruger.

Some of the improvements were a better forearn hanger mount (still can be an issue if the forearm is not free-floated), an adjustable extractor/ejector (choose one or the other), classic good looks, American steel and the famous “Bank Vault” action. The only negative I have found is mine seems to be heat sensitive. Two rounds in sucession are fine but it’s the third that wanders. Let him cool and bingo, 1 ½ inch groups at 200 yards.
When I got my 375, the only other option in the Tropical Rifle was 458 Winchester Magnum. Now you can get a number of other calibers including the 416 Rigby Magnum (man, whould I go for one of those if I wasn’t working on another project). Call me nostalgic (you must be too Mr. 45-70 Goernment) but the 416 has been proven for decades to be a true elephant stopper with managable recoil and has a better trajectory than the 458. The major draw back has been the price of brass. With the advent of the 416 Remington Magnum, a virtual plethoa of projectiles has recently become available.
Really, my biggest issue is how to explain another “Elephant Gun” to my Chief Financial Officer…or maybe a 7mm Remington Magnum…or a 22-250…

I have a couple of NEF's in 357 max, 44 Mag, and 30-30. Cheap and very accurate.

I've got a #1 in 45-70, great shooter, I cast for it, to the best of my knowledge it has never had a jacketed bullet thru it. Remington Rolling block, Argentine Army contract of 1879, good shooter. Savage Model 40 in 22 Hornet, nice rifle. Several T/C Contenders, lots of fun!!!!!!!

I to shoot a Savage #40, for Pdogs it is great within its range limits. I have been working on getting Lyman 438's to shoot good and was having little luck. I changed lube to Speed Green and Powder to H4198 at 11.2 grs and thing are looking much better. When I use J-word bullets, LiLgun has been the answer for me.
