    Default Pedersolli Sharps

    Has anyone done any reloading with the Lyman cast bullets, gas check, 500Gr in 45/70.? It is something i would like to try. I have a Pedersolli Sharps, looking for medium range knockdown power on large game...
    Thanks;
    Liberty.

    anything over 1200 fps will provide knoc er two holes with a 500 gr boolit.
    you should be able to get 1800 if you can stand it .in a 45-70 with a 500 gr boolit not something i would recommend in the pedersoli.
    try for about 1400- 1600 fps.
    unique about 8-9 grs will be on the low end 2400 should work as well as h-4198,I-3031,h-322
    take a look in a lyman cast bullet manual for a bunch of good ideas.

    Have you ever thought of using the Lyman 500 gr. BP spitzer with black powder? Works great with about 65grs. of FFG and 1 card wad. Make sure there is no air space in the case between the powder charge and the bullet. Lots of smoke - lots of fun! ......and it'll knock a moose down.

    Talking 45-70

    I also have a Ped. Sharps (Quigley)

    I make all of my bulletts, 330hp,405 fn,and 500 pointed.

    I use IMR SR-4759 with all of my loads,. from 24 grs to 27grns.

    You can load heavier if you can take the recoil. (ha ha)

    Liberty;

    I too have a Pedersoli Sharps and am going to hunt with it this year, I cast 405gr HBFN, 500gr FN, and 500gr Pointed. I have used 2400 and the 405gr with good results. With the 500gr bullets I am using a duplex load and am getting an average vol. of 1272 (low is 1262 and high 1282 fps.) I may be wrong but it seems that if I keep my vol. around the original BP vol. (1200fps / 1300fps) I get better accuracy. At 1272 fps Average I get 1.25" at 100 yds.. If I go over 1375 fps / 1400fps it seems that my groups open up.

    Matt
