1903 Springfield Safety
I am just throwing this out there for ideas. I have a sporterized 1903 Springfield. The barrel is sporter weight with no front sight. It has a one piece scope mount with a fixed four power scope. I put a box of shells through it and really liked the fit and accuracy. The one negative issue I have is the safety lever. It has the original safety and it strikes the scope. I checked brownells and midway for different safety levers. Has anyone done this recently and have any advice on which safety lever design to get? Also, what about a scope that allows the original lever to clear the rear objective?

As much as I hate them, the over-under type mounts should get the scope up high enough to let the safety work..

The receiver is drill and tapped for the redfield one piece scope mount. I took the base off and blue loctited the screws. I'm actually looking at some red dot scopes since they have the long eye relief with a small rear lens which should allow the original safety to clear. I don't want to send the bolt off and get the safety changed to a Winchester style 3-position safety due to the cost. Anybody else tried a red dot scope on a sporter rifle? I'm not planning on target shooting at long range.

Red dot sights are fantastic on close range (under 200yds) hunting rifles. As my eyes age I'm slowly converting from peeps to red dots.

303tom - that's a pretty cool idea! How does it mount? This method probably won't work on my Springfield, but I have some Enfields that it would.

On the 2A`s the V on the rear sight is screwed on , I took it off , put on a piece of scope mount & put the optic`s on ! That simple !

Install a Timney with safety. They fit on 1903 or 1903/A3s

I have them on three sporterized Springfields. (one example attached)
You will need a gunsmight to install it, and will have to do a little inletting on the inside of the stock to accomodate it. You can do that with a Dremmel tool and reseal the wood.

That`s what I use on my 03 sport !

Now that's the way to go! Other than cutting the wood out, the trigger should go in pretty easy?

i havea 03 just like the one in the picture. I also need to put a scope on my`s. i try the L thing mount but it was a complete waste of money. the frame of the mount was bent and could never get it zero in. Im using the peep and front sight and im doing well at 200 yrds. more that that i cant see lol. Love the 03 sprignfield very accurate.

I'm going to try to post two photos of a couple of my sporter 03's. one has a two position winchester style safety and the other is a low scope mount replacement lever. The top is a 6.5-284 and the bottom is a .35 Whelen. The Whelen is a bit dusty but I'm sure you will get over the trauma. I had my gunsmith install them both. The safeties, not the dust.
