Ken Waters has, in his Pet Loads:

8/9/10grs for 800/896/991fps in a 7 1/2 in. gun with Lyman 42798.
He checked carefully the expansion of his case heads so I trust these loads were safe in his gun.

I use some surplus Herco-like powder at 7.1grs with a 215 SWC grainer, which is a light but very accurate load, once you've found how to grab the *@%$&! grip .

Be very careful with the NS, it seems that most of them are out of timing at least in DA (hammer drops before the cylinder locks, and the forcing cone is quite reduced); so I wouldn't shoot SWC with the otherwise horrendous DA :).

Alliant got new pdf tables (look in Cowboy section):

The old tables had more data. Let me know if you want them.

:-D Thanks here also... I stopped at 9 grains Unique... 8 looks very good on paper and no excessive case expansion .... Double action is awful... but when the varmits are close who would notice.

KG-42 was correct as my old New Service was also way out of time and did not acvance the cylinder completely. Fast cock took care of it but I decided there had to be a simple solution and there is. My weapon is old, ugly so there is no Collector worry. I removed the hand and on the "Lower Indexing ledge" soldered on a small piece of steel. It matches the size of the engagement "ledge" and is beveled towards the inside where the engagements first contacts with the cylinder ratchet. Thickness of the piece about .o1. Took two hours complete with final diamond honing to very close fit. Now my New Service locks solid in single and double action just before the hammer reaches final cock slow or fast or double action. Donīt ya love it when a plan comes together ! [smilie=w:

Mine is an old boy too; but you can still see some deep blue behind the cylinder shield and under the release latch [smilie=1:.

Only blue (nice fire Blue) left on mine is the backside of the hammer and trigger.
