I understand that kapok is used to 'pad out' a case with a load that is leaving a gap between powder and bullet. I am looking to start casting my own .303 bullets for a No: 4 Enfield and i was wondering if there was an alternative to kapok for case filling.

I see no real need for fillers in most cast loads. Many do use them and get positive results. The most commonly used now is dacron, but there are lots of different fillers in use. Rather than my going into detail, it would be easier for you to go next door to Cast Boolits and search "fillers".

i like to use dryer lint it is cheap and light.
don't cram it in there, use just enough to hold the powder down and enough to reach the boolit.

Hi Duncan,

KISS no need for fillers mate, as versifier said.

I never use them in bottle necked cases or with white powder.

Hi Duncan

http://www.pufflon.com/ is the latest wonder. It would probably cost you both arms if you found it locally so better order it directly from the States.

Try to borrow a copy of the Manuel de Rechargement Malfatti, it might have hints about what's available locally.

As suggested above and here, fillers can be avoided http://www.castbulletassoc.org/forum/view_topic.php?id=1387&forum_id=22

If you use pistol powders, A1 and A0 seem to be the most popular thanks to their bulk an price. A1 is equivalent to Unique and A0 a little slower.

I have an old Winchester 38-55 that refused to shoot groups until I filled the "air space" with Cream of wheat. Same barn door loads now shoot 2-3 inches at 75 yards.:-D

Found the same improvment in a NEA 38-55. Dropped from about 5' to 1.5' using toilet paper filler.
