Does anyone know why there is such a shortage of shotgun powder? I understand a Hodgdon plant burned down but crips they didn't make it all!

We're out up here too, even from the suppliers who normally don't run out!

Maybe we need to try stamp collecting, is there never is a shortage of stamps!!!!!!

I have 1 pound of clays... I am rich!

I could get 2 or 3 more canisters of international Clays (I have 6 already) but it's a lot more expensive by the pound (14 ounces) and I really want IMR 700x. I wanted to score a couple 8 lb jugs but they don't exist anymore! I may get it just because it's shotgun powder and I can come up with a good load with it... Or I could just wait and hole for the best since I'm good through next year... What to do, what to do???

Clayt, I have some spare Blue Dot you're welcome to if you can use it, but I'm not parting with any UNQ or 2400.

This response from Reliant:

The situation is looking better with each passing day.
If we look at the retail marked we have never really seen these shortage, whether it was for bullets, ammo, primers or powder, go longer than 18 months. We are now approaching that mark.
We also have three market indicators that lead us to believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The first of these is that ammunition supplies in the stores are better today than it was 8-9 months ago. We can now find just about any ammo we want in the stores.
The second indicator is that primer orders have dropped significantly.
Finally, gun sales have taken a nose dive in the last two to three months.
All of this leads many to believe that the supplies of powder should start showing back up on the shelves soon. Just recently, in my local town, I saw several bottles of propellant on the shelves that I had not seen in some time.
About all we can do is be patient, it won't last forever.
Thanks,

Shoot Straight

get "Promo" it cheaper and works great

I have Promo but I'm struggling with it to get a 1oz load that cycles my sons automatic with him shooting it. IMR 700x, Alliant E3 and hodgdon international all work good. The Promo, not so good... Actually, I'm saving it for my 1oz loads from my Browning pump or 1 1/8 loads for my automatic. It works good for those two, and 7/8 loads for my pump... But I shoot a fraction what he shoots so I need powder for him.

I use 19gr PROMO, Pink claybuster wads, AA hulls with 1oz of #8, never a problem through my almost never cleaned Benelli

I know what you're saying... I shot a round of sporting clays last fall. We both used my shotgun but had to use different loads. I used a 1oz load but he was able to shoot 7/8 load all day long with no problems. He was over 300 lbs and was a very solid platform where I weigh 180 and moved too much with the recoil so hulls would fail to eject. My gun and my sons are inertia actions.

I've seen that before, but more often with handguns.

Yeah, !'ve seen auto handguns limp, wristed and they jam often. It's pretty much the same with light weight upper bodies and inertia action shotguns. There seems to be a different recoil pulse with Promo and Red Dot than 700x, International or E3 and lighter loads with those powders will reliably cycle the action with him shooting. And of course, I find this out when there is a shotgun powder shortage...

Stopped in at the gun shop I get most of my powder from... shelves have about 1/4 of the normal 8lb selection and 2/3 of the 1 pound selection. Nothing I was interested in though.

Were any of those 8 pounders shotgun powder?
