What was your farthest shot at a varmit that you hit and what caliber did you use?
I just shot a woodchuck with my .223 55gr hp at 427 yards. I paced it off and the later my buddy and I checked it again with a laser range finder.....Awesome!!![smilie=w:

When I was 13 I bought a mossburg 22 with a peep sight and fold down forearm, bolt action. A friend and I went rabbit hunting, and I was having one of those days when you are in the zone. I couldn't seem to miss. My buddy had a semi-auto and he shot at one jack a number of times, missing each time. The jack ran about 1/4 mile and sat up near a tank battery(oil field storage tanks). The sun was low behind us and the rabbit was shining bright. He said, hit that one, hot shot. I loosened the nut holding the peep sight and raised it to the highest position, aimed, then raised up a little and fired, the rabbit disappeared. He said, missed him, then we heard eeee... We went down and there lay the jack shot through the head. He told every guy at school the next day, for the rest of my school years I was known as a guy who could shoot! I figured it was best to limit who I went shooting with so I wouldn't lose my reputation.

Actually about 3 weeks ago I took a rockchuck at 550 yards, my furthest shot so far with my .300 weatherby magnum. I got some of it on video tape too.. I might be able to share a little video.

Anywho, it took 4 shots. I went with my brother and he ranged it out at 490 yards (but was actually ranging a small groove in the valley in front of the chuck). So I shot three low and told him to re-range it. He said 549 yards and the rest is history... I used a shepherd 6 x 18 scope and love it.

It would have to be a Crow at 400yds using a .224improved (303-22 with the shoulder reformed from 60deg to 45deg ) with a 52 gn speer .

Does a clay pidgeon count being shot at 100 yards with a Model 27 S&W .357 Mag from a rest sitting with open sights?

A magpie on the wing with my Marlin 44 mag. at 150 yds. was probably my most impressive to me. Gophers at 400 to 450 with my heavy barrel savage 22-250.

That's a rush everytime to me.

Out here in Montana where I live we do get in some pretty long shots at coyotes and prairie dogs so I had to think a while to recall my longest at small stuff.

Have a buddy who is an ex-1000 yd. shooter. He's always taking me out to see how far we can shoot a prairie dog. He hits real regularly with his fancy bench .30-06 and .308 Norma (Hart built) out to 500 yds. One day he got one at 817 yds. (ranged) with the '06. That same day was my longest hit, also. I knew he wanted to do long-range stuff so I took my custom Shilen-barreled .25-06. It took me three shots to get zeroed in on him, but I'm handicapped with only a 3.5X10 Leupold where he was using a Target model 36X Leupold. My shot was only 560 yds.

It wasn't a varmint, but I got a mule deer at 370 +/-, paced distance. That was with my old .25-06; Nosler 120 gr Partition, 48.5 gr IMR 4350, CCI 200. I traded that rifle off when I moved up here to AK as it is a little light for everything up here.

Many years ago, got a woodchuck in western N.Y. at over 500 with a pre 64 Mod 70, Varm. 243 w/12x Unertal(sp). Have taken numerous p-dogs in excess of 350-400 w/223, but of course there were numerous misses as well. However, the varm. shot I prize most was with my K-Hor. in #3 Ruger/Old Weaver K-8, w 35 gr. V-Max over 12 gr. H-110, on a med. size p-dog at 265 ranged. Clean center shot kill w/just a little tail twirl. That is stretching a K, and I was really tickled with myself for that one.

Well mine wasn't a varmint, but many, many, years ago I was shooting an NRA bullseye match. Back then I shot a Custom Giles .45 colt. Fantastic gun, guaranteed 1 3/8 groups at 50 yd. from a ransom rest. Sometimes when the gun got a bit on the dirty side it would double, or triple on me. This particular afternoon I guess it was just a bit dirtier than normal and it doubled. The first round was an x the second hit a knot in the wood above eye level, the round bounced off the knot, hit the concrete deck, bounced off the concrete, hit a steel pole, then hit my ex wife right in the forehead. It had expended enough energy so it just whacked her good, But considering she left me 6 months later, I thought it was a fantastic shot!!!!:coffee:

In the past I have taken deer with a .243 at 175 yards in WV. Finding a longer range shot is not going to happen, the mountains in the way.

I shoot coyotes out to 150 yards near my home, but generally they are some where near my 100 yard markings, so I use my AR on them.

Right now I am trying to bag a G'Hog with my 10/22 at probably 30 yards, I am using Remington SubSonic 22 LR for this.

When my daughter was in High school she saw a coyote on the south side of our house while getting ready for school. I grabbed my Weatherby Varminter 22-250 and from the edge of our house I squeeked enough to stop the coyote in a safe shooting zone. I fired one shot and dropped him for the longest shot I ever made. I had to use my range finder from where I hit him back to the house to see how far it was. It turned out to be 342 yards. Not exactly really long range but I was proud of the shot. I've had chances to shoot deer at longer ranges but was not willing to take the chance on wounding one on a off percentage shot. The longest shot I've taken on deer was a doe on Fort Bragg in North Carolina at just under 300 yards. I prefer not to take long shots at deer or most any proper game animal. In the past several years I don't think I've taken a shot at a deer over 100 yards. In fact most of them have been under 30 yards.

Well, I once shot a high BC bullet out of an 8mm Rem Mag at about a 33 degree angle above horizon and it hit something a few miles downrange.

Seriously, anyone can say anything about such feats. I guess I've shot a few Pdogs at well over 400. Larger varmints.... about a two way tie.... two different killing shots with a .270 Win, 130 grain bullets. Both coyotes- both running and quartering away. Different times about 6 years apart. Two different witnesses. One shot taken at each. One at 490 yards and the other at 495 yards.

Well mine is not long by any standard, but I used to have the wife flip quarters up in the air for me to shoot at with my first gun ever, an old winchester 22 automatic rifle. I got to where I could hit them with some regularity. But the best one was I took the BIL out and didn't have a quarter so he flipped up a washer for me to try, we taped the hole with masking tape I had in the truck, and he flipped it good and high straight up. He nearly freaked out when it landed in his hand with a neat little hole in the tape. I carried that washer around for a long time, think I still have it.
Longest shot was a whitetail at about 200 yards off hand.

Have numerous p-dog kills at over 400 and a few over 500 with 22-250/243. One woodchuck many years ago with 243 in excess of 500 yds. However the shot that I will probably always remember most is a one shot kill on a Red Heartabeast at 438 yds ranged w/7x57 Mauser, 162 gr Hor, in a 77 Ruger. Was in Namabia two years ago. Will probably (with the economy the way it is) never be able to again hunt Africa.

Let`s see:

North Dakota jack rabbit 175 yards with a NEF single shot 17 HMR. No wind of course. Lazer rangefinder confirmed. Man I luv that gun. It typically shoots 5 shots into a 1/2 inch or less at 100yards.

My longest shot on any game is a South Dakota Mule deer buck at 498 yards with a 300 WSM Browning rifle. Another excellent shooting rifle. A Missouri whitetail doe last year at 367 yards with the same rifle. Both critters were confirmed for distance with a Leupold RX-III lazer rangefinder.

I couple of weeks ago I hit a 12" steel target at 200 yards bench shooting my Marlin .357 levergun with an 18.5" barrel and open sights. I could barely see the target and wouldn't have known I even hit it were it not for my buddy watching through his spotting scope.

I killed a deer @ 250 yards with my 7mm Rem Mag once, and at the range one day I hit a 2x6 on the berm @ 200 yards with my Ruger .45 Colt, after ranging it with 5 other shots..That one was pure luck. I have hit gopher silhouette targets @ 300 yards with my 30/06 A.I., along with a cabbage head.
Once I went to a private range with my youngest son, and before we left I saw this man sized silhouette target waaaaaay down range. I asked my son about it and he said "We call that one Bill Clinton."
I asked to shoot at it with his .308, and he set it up for me. I shot 5 rounds and got 5 hits. The target was 1000 yards away. That was the first time I ever shot at anything that far in my life.

I'm not one for long range shots at game as I like to get up close and personal with the game I'm after. However, there are times when shooting way out yonder is either necessary or mandatory or both.

On a Mule Deer hunt, my hunting partner wounds a nice buck that was running off and about to disappear into a gully. I took the shot with my Remington 660 in .308 Win. and fortunately dropped the deer. We paced it off at 427 paces. Strictly a luck shot. Good luck for the deer and very good luck for me as I had my winter meat.

One of the areas I hunt elk has very laarge wide open areas we call "parks" Some are as wide as two miles and and ten miles long. Once the first shot is fired on opening day, the elk head on out into the middle of these parks where they can lie down and watch fo danger in all directions. Dong a sneak on them is nearly, if not impossible. About six years ago, I drew that area and I stalked to the very last bit of cover, a small bush. I lasered the cow elk that was the closest to me at 530 yards and no way to get closer. I got into a sitting position and carefully squeezed off the shot. The elk staggered a bit and fell kicking out her last. The rifle? A Winchester M70 in .300 Win. Mag. shooting a very stiffly loaded 200 gr. Speer Hot-core. The three months of serious practice out to 500 meters on my club's silhouette range paid off nicely.

One more, this time with a handgun. A buddy and I were up on the Olympic Penninsula in Washigton state on an elk hunt tha we were invited to do. One of the members of our hunting party was a retired judge who absolutely hated handguns. My buddy and I were both packing S&W .44 magnums as sidearms. His honor kept ragging us about those handguns and me being a bit short fused anyway decided to shut him up if the opportunity arrived. It did. We were resting up in thei meadow and looking down into the canyon you could see the Humptulips River down at the bottom though an opening in the trees and brush. The judge was tarting up again so I said to him, "I'll bet you $100 I can either hit or come close to the log sticking out of the water." His answer was, "A pistol cannot shoot that far." I said, "If that's so, then you'll make an easy $100. Put up or shut up." He asked if I'd take a check and I said sure. He also commented that he really did not want to "steal" my money. Anyway, I took the shot and clipped a branch off the log. I then asked him if he wanted to go double or nothing? He said nothing. Just pulled out his check book after we got back to town and paid me. My buddy Don, after the shot just smiled and asked me if I felt guilty taking his money. I looked at him with a straight face and said, "Nope!"

Canuck I checked and it says varmint so it does not count, but you do get honorable mention and a chance at the big prize.

Hey I wanna play too. I once made four consecutive hits on a steel plate off the bench at 400 yards. Then I noticed that all four were off to one side so I held off the plate to allow for the wind. The wind must have shifted because the fifth shot missed.

I hate coyotes since one killed my cat. Shoot them all.

I have killed several deer from a tree stand overlooking my swamp at about 250 yards. Resting on the railing with my 30 06 is not at all hard to do.
