Hey Lee welcome to the guide!!!
Lee,
Cartridges of the World has four loads listed.
I am surprised that Ideal #36 no longer listed it.
I would doubt that black powder was ever common with that cartridge, as it was used in the '95 Winchester.
Cheers from Darkest California,

To All Thank For The Warm Greetings From The Cold North And Thank You For The Leads
Lee
Thank you for the hospitable welcome. Both Oklahoma and Australia are well known for that.
There does not seem to be much data on the.38-72. My _Pet Loads_ is loaned out so I can't look there, but it may be another place to look. Ken Waters examined many of the more obscure cartridges.
I got more than a hundred shots from the one I had with .30-40 Krag cases blown out and with the bullet seated out and loaded singly uncrimped.
My bore seemed large, and I ended up shooting the cast bullets unsized.
I generally avoid very slow powders in old straight walled cases. I do not recall the charges I used, but they were pipsqueak loads.
Sadly, I traded it off for a better grade .30-'03.
Cheers from Darkest California,
Ross
Hi Lee
My edition of COTW ( 7th, 1993) gives two loads for the 38-72:
275 lead + 27gr IMR4198 @ 1350fps, bullet is Lyman375167
255 lead + 33gr IMR3031 @ 1735fps, unspecified bullet.
"Modern Handloading" from GC Nonte has 1 load in the black powder section:
34gr of 3031 with No375167 bullet. This load is listed for a "group III" guns which seem to be the strongers of the time. What's yours?
