My most recent load is 7grs. of Auto Comp with a 240 SWC for 886 fps.. There are plenty of other loads using Unique, 231,AA#5 to name just a few. The reason I say Auto Comp is that it seems to be easy to find and it meters very well and is clean burning and accurate.

For 170 to 260gr cast bullets and about 1000fps max:

5 to 7 grains of superfast powders like Bullseye or Titegroup;
6 to 8 grains of 231/HP-38;
7 to 9 grains of Unique/Universal/Herco or similar fast powders.

These loads are usually in Cowboy Data/ Lead Bullets/ Reduced Loads sections, if the company bothered with them.
If not, maximum loads for the 44 Special usually make good starting ones for the Magnum case.

Be careful to check your cases for accidental double charges as light loads of fast powders don't take much space.

My old 10" Ruger .44 Flattop really liked a 250 gr (actually 262) LSWC over 16.0 grs 4759 for right at 1100 fps....Hard hitting but felt recoil was pretty mild in that "long tom".....
