Probably the fan. They are inexpensive and quite critical for the good health of the processor.
If it were the hard drive it would probably be dead by now (11/10).
I have a used backup CD-drive (creative 52X) which sounds like the PC is building up power to take of... I think it hovered once during trials...

Let's see now, I built this one, built another one...uh,. probably have about
7-8 computers.
Made one specifically for ballistics.
Mucho fun.
I get that "taking off" noise once in a while from my older computer. I sure hope it's not a hard drive! A fan is one thing, fix and go on. But a hard drive means a lot of hassle moving stuff around BEFORE it quits.
And of course we have current backups, don't we?
