new loads for my .44mags

I was playng round with intermidiate loads for my .44mag Ruger SBH's today & stumbled across 8.6 gns of( ADI) AP70 which is roughly equal to Hogodon "Universial " pushing along a 240 gn cast Keith type bullet . I was able to knock down Turkey Sils at 100 mtrs & the loads were quite comftable out of my 7 1/2 inch barrels ! I have yet to try accuracy testing but the load seems promising !

I love that kind of load ; I'm around 9 grains of a "Herco like" surplus powder at the time; 9.2gr was my pet load with an Universal twin.

From the Titegroup load I think their bbl was about 8"; the '95 free "Basic Reloader Manual" gave:
240 LSWC/8.0 Universal/1045fps/21300cup in a 7" bbl.

As you make long shots, have you noticed how the point of impact changes with the load? It first drove me nuts at 25 yds, trying to stay close to the full power POI.

I tried Titegroup and was happy with it too; seems it works well in everything from the fist try...

Of course that kind of load is frowned upon by many at the range, they arguing that the caliber is made to shoot MAGNUM loads..... I got tired of asking them why they shoot 38 in their 357 and why they can't hit the target at 25 yds with said MAGNUM loads.....

Know excactly what you mean there Kg ! See it up the range & out in the field all the time ! I quite often go on to the Hodgdon web sit as many of their Powders are manufactured in AUZ now & are interchangeable! Yeah the change of impact, near sent me crazy for a while there I'd worked out that the reduced loads would alter my groups accordinly & never bothered to advise other shooters of this point when they've asked about th loads I'm using & then they cry foul when they've used them & not allowed for the change of impact .......


My fav Steel load is 23.5 gns of ADI AR2205 (H4227) behind a 240 grain cast for hitting them Rams out at the 200 "SHOOTER" It's just I really like to have a pleasent Plinkin' Load to play with

Do you have local mold makers?

There used to be a Gent in South Australia that not only made moulds but also built B/P rifles by the name of BUGG but I have'nt heard of him or his work in years .Though his moulds do turn up everynown again ! He specialized in brass & I have never heard a bad word said about them !

THe other offerings localy are CBE (cast bullet engineering ) I use their moulds almost excluivly they also specialize in brass & I can do nothing more than sing their praises ! Their web site can be found at

Ive been shooting 7gr tight group with a 240gr cast bullet. Its working pretty good,not much leading. Think i got to do someting about the creep on my trigger. I'm shootng into 4" at 50yds.

24gr? 240gr? , is that a short magnum ?

My notes say that when I was your age I shot 26gr under a 250gr SWC; they also say: "...don't do again unless really sure you are alone on the range..." .
Now that the 500 is around I guess I would be ok .

Hi Toney,
As good as it is, Titegroup still makes me nervous with its habit of disappearing in the bottom of cases... What gun and lube do you use?

A 7.5" Ruger NM SBH and Lee liquid alox. I think from a stand on the river bottom this load should do the job on our local whitetails, where i hunt 50-60yds is about as far a you can see.
