    Default Varget in the 45-70

I used up all of my 5744 and have started using Varget with 405 grain cast and jacketed bullets in the 45-70. Varget burns cleaner to me and I like the fact that it pretty much fills the case up completely. I have only fired a few sight in groups with the 405 grain jacketed but have loaded some 405 grain cast w/GC and am anxious to see how they perform. I'm working in the Trapdoor pressure range with a H&R Buffalo Classic and and 21" Encore barrel.

Anyone else trying Varget in the 45-70?

Yes... Ive used it with a trapdoor, 405 cast. with fairly good results, but I really had
great results with it with 500 gr. jacketed. Id have to go down stairs and check but I think I was using 35 grs. varget on the 500 and 40 on the 405s.... dont take that to the bank....
    I can check.....

    retired,

How was the accuracy with Varget? I have some 500 grain jacketed, but I haven't loaded any yet.

    Thanks for the response!

I tryed Varget in all three of my 45-70's and could not get it to work at all. I went back to IMR 3031 for both cast and Jacketed slugs. I have a Dantish roller,NEF single and a marlin lever all in 4570. I just love the way that they just shoot when using full power loads.

    tdoor4570,

What issues did you have with Varget? Accuracy? Velocity?

Sorry I didnt get back sooner,... the Accuracy and Consistency with the Varget 35 grs with the Jacketed 500 gr. Was excellant,... Will get the Chrono out this spring and do some real exacting work, but right now the BOB temperture (Butt on Bench) is 14 below.
and I have a hard time getting a good shiver group.....

Hey retired, I hear you! I can't wait for the temperature to get above zero! I'm glad to see you had good results with the heavy bullets in the 45-70. I hope to use some 500 grainers myself.

Just could not get the same preformance with varget as IMR 3031 in all dept. All three shoot sub 1 inch at 100 couldn't even get close with varget.but it works good in my 223's and 308.

tdoor - thanks for the info! I'll pick up some 3031 and and load some shells so I can compare group sizes with the Varget.

You ought to have decent results with RL7, too. It has very similar burn characteristics to 3031 and where one works, the other usually does also. (Like Varget/4064.) Which will be more accurate in any given rifle is a matter of testing though.
