i liked 5-7 grs unique in my 38-40.
if the 89 is a stronger gun i would start with 12 grs of 2400 and work from there.

    Good afternoon
I have a 44-40 down here with me and for the 205 grain boolit I use 8 grains Unique so I would think that 7 grains would do nicely.
Unique is an EXCELLENT powder for these old pot belly rounds.
I have a 1889 and a Winy in 38-40 up in Illinois that are REAL favorites of mine for stalking about ditches looking for "varmits". My load is a 200 grain with 8 grains in the Marlin and 7g in the older 73 Winy.
