V you sent me some 55 grain. FNGC bullets. In my Hornet do they need the gas checks? I usually have not loaded my Hornet hot with jacketed bullets. My gun likes the 45 grain Sierra jacketed Hornet bullets.

No matter how hot you load a Hornet, they do not need GC's. The max possible charge levels just don't kick them hard enough. BUT, the rifle may prefer checked bullets to regulars for reasons of its own. No way to know without asking it.

Hah, I have a mental picture of j1 asking his rifle if it wants gas checks... :)

V you sent me some 55 grain FNGC bullets for my hornet.

I loaded my Hornet with 45 grain Sierra Hornet jacketed bullets over IMR 4198 powder. I tried to get the Sierra techies for a powder suggestion with the cast you sent but they are very busy right now. I emptied enough Hornet brass to load up some of the cast you sent. Ready and willing. I will call them after deer season ends.

Have you ever loaded for the Hornet using the cast you sent me? If so what powder did you use?

I haven't, but two of my friends shoot cast in their 14" Hornet and KHornet Contenders. (Last spring I opened up a pair of 14"ers from regular to K, one for each of them. It got them about 100fps more with a slight charge increase, but that was the only difference, accuracy was the same, bullet and powder preference was unchanged.)

Both say IMR 4227 is the go-to powder for their 55gr Hornet loads. 2400 works very well on paper, as does UNQ, but neither gives the velocity of IMR 4227 for small game/varmint loads. One barrel HATES GC's, one HATES without them, one likes them either way. I don't find 4198 listed for bullets above 50gr in the Hornet in my Sierra manual, probably a good reason for that even if I don't know what it is.

CBH has no listings at all for heavier bullets in the Hornet and the regular Lyman manual does but shows max cast load velocities around 2000fps, which does not agree with what my friends are telling me. They say 2000 up to 2500 depending on the barrel and where its individual accuracy node is for the bullet. Both of them have over 40 years experience with the cartridge in dozens of different rifles and handguns and one of them has been shooting cast in his for that long, so I would tend to believe them.

Use the jacketed data, like the .30-30 there is no difference in loading them. With the cast bullet the pressure will be a tad bit lower and the MV a tad bit higher compared to the same weight jacketed bullet. Those bullets ought to be the perfect woodchuck medicine if your rifle likes them. They have dropped large dogs/coyotes no problem at 200yds from a 14" Contender. That alloy can handle 2500 no problem - up that fast the GC is probably a good idea. Your rifle may find its best accuracy anywhere from 1500-2500, if it likes them.

O K I got the techies and one load they reccomended was Unique. That suits me fine cause I have Unique on hand. Glad that I do.

If I wanted to talk to ANY machine it would have been my Triumph Bonneville motorcycle. I loved that bike no dealers or service in Pa so I sold it.

Bzzzzzzzzz.

Sorry H I could not resist. It is deer season now so I will not be reloading or shooting the Hornet soon. Got a good sized doe so far. Buck only for me now.
