Bob...

Been using this load for 40-years now and my dad and I have killed hundreds of whitetails with it...

Bullet: Hornady 170-grain FP
Brass: Mixed
Powder: Reloder 15
Grains: 34.0
Primer: CCI 200 (LR)
OAL: 2.55"
Lee Factory Crimp

I produces 2175 FPS from both our Marlins and Winchesters.

Good luck and good hunting!

Wish I had a .30-30 rifle sometimes. Right now my only thutty-thutty is a Contender pistol. I love it. Can shoot pointy bullets in it. Haven't tried casting bullets for it yet. It shoots Nosler 150 BT's at 2000 FPS and Hornady 130 gr. SSP's at just over 2100 FPS, both with H335. Either does a great job on antelope and deer.

Well I got a Lyman 311041 mold and loaded up the following:

30 cartridges - 34 gr 4831 thks to D.O.K.
15 cartridges - 10 gr. Unique

Will post range results and chrono data in a week or so. Colder than the hobbs of hell right now (-5C wind at 20K out of the NOrth) - Dave don't you be telling me it is 30C down under or you may get an extended house guest and I eat lots! I'll on this chat forum tonite under this handle.

I've used the sierra 170 fn with max charges of 4064, H-322, 3031, H-4895 with good results, 4064 and H-322 being my picks. I've fired these out of marlins and winnys whatever your pick they all shoot fine and will kill you a deer dead as long as you put it in a heart lung area w/o going much over 20 yards. Hmmm, works just about exactly like a marlin .35 remington loaded with the exact same powders, 150 fps slower with a 200 gr RNFNGC cast. One would think we're on to something with this class of chambering.

Since you want yours for deer this silly load of mine prob'ly won't do you any good but it is my favorite and makes up at least 95% of the (3000 or so) 30-30 shells I've shot.

110gr soft point M1 carbine bullets or 100gr SpeerPlinkers at 2200fps using various amounts of single based powders from 4198 to 4350.

"jackrabbit shells :)"

Well I got a Lyman 311041 mold

Hi Canuck. Favorite with that boolit is 30.5 gr. H-335. Hardened wheelweights (water dropped from the mould) sized .310" (.311" for Marlin) and Lee Liquid Alox lube or Felix Lube.

Lee soup-can with 8.0 gr. Unique does it for a plinker.

Hunting:

Bullet: 155 gr LFNGC
Charge: 33.0 gr
Powder: H4895
Primer: CCI LR
Chrono @ 15' 2320fps ave. 20 rounds

Bullet: 170gr JFN Hornady
Charge: 31.0gr
Powder: H4895
Primer: CCI LR
Chrono @ 15' 2110fps ave. 20 rounds

They grouped well out of both my Marlin and my Winchester.

Plinking: 155 gr. LFN
Charge: 22.0gr
Powder: H4198
Primer: CCI LR
Chrono @ 15' 1705fps ave. 50 rounds so far (low 1610, high 1745fps)
for some reason this load is extremely accurate out of my Winchester, but a bit wild out of my old Marlin.
