The Redhawk is probably about the best hunting revolver made today, but if there's anything in the woods around here you can't kill with a .44mag, I haven't met it yet. If I owned a .480 99% of the time I'd be shooting greatly reduced loads. I might enjoy playing with it for a few months, but the excitement would fade quickly as they aren't exactly target pistols. Hell, even if I owned one in .44mag, most of the time I'd be shooting reduced loads. Big bores don't have the fascination for me that they used to. OTOH if I were into hunting very large game (elk, moose, big bears) with a handgun, that would be my first choice.

Yep that's about what i was thinking. Went into town and picked up a blackhawk. Already got 4 sets of dies and bullet mold for the 44. Think after buying the 480 i'd have to save up to shoot it.

they do kill deer well.
you don't need over 1200 to do that.
and a softer cast bullet alloy works well.
many times overdoing it will produce poor results on animals.
keep the speeds realistic and the alloy in the 10-12 bhn range and you'll have a winner.

There ain't too many reduced loads for the .480.

It's a great revolver...

i agree with versifier, i have a ruger sbh hunter in .44mag. i have not put a scope on it yet but it came with the scope ring's. it does a great job on hog's and deer with felt recoil that doesen't leave a grimace on your face. i have both s/w 500mag. and 460mag. and shoot more reduced recoil loads than full loads because of recoil. now if you gonna hunt big game then that's the way to go, 512gr 440gr 400gr will drop any big game in the USA. and cheaper to reload and shoot .44mag.

Of all my revolvers, the 480 tops the cake, till maybe I get my new 500 Smith in next week.
Only problem I have is my front sight needs to be taller. I've filed the rear blade down as far as I dare, my next step will be buying a taller front.
Best loads I found so far is 19 gr of H110 using a 355 gr lead gas check. I've tried all primers and Winchester standard primers show my best groups.
My next endeavor with it this spring will be a taller sight and casting 400 gr's.
I dont think you'll be dissappointed with the 480. I'm not with mine.

I like my .480 Ruger, its a Super Redhawk with a 9 1/2" barrel. Its quite accurate with the one boolit I cast for it, a 420gr LFN. So far the chrono numbers and group size has been great with 21.5gr H110 (NOT published load, work up to it). Velocity was about 1100fps IIRC. I haven't shot any other bullet out of this gun.
